Why it matters: The ultimate power of a distribution system comes from its scalability. Network bandwidth limits each server performing distribution to about 5 different simultaneous recipients. When your PACS simultaneously send sstudies to more than 5 people, you need one or more additional distribution server(s). However, a central distribution server that controls all distribution servers simplifies PACS administration. This central server uses distribution rules--we call them subscriptions--kept in the central database, and applies them to all distribution servers.
