DICOM Forward provides fault tolerant forwarding of studies via a DICOM connection to a remote computer across an occasionally unreliable data connection.
DICOM Forward runs as a service on the Windows computer. A separate log reader program runs on the desktop to display the service log or configure the service. When the log is not displayed, the program displays an icon in the system tray at the bottom right hand side of the desktop.
DICOM Forward provides a DICOM Storage Service Class Provider at the forwarding machine to receive images from DICOM modalities via a DICOM connection. Images received from the modalities are stored in a cache folder for forwarding.
Images are sent via the DICOM protocol to the receiving computer, using multiple transfer protocols, including secure DICOM protocol.
- Sends image files via a DICOM protocol to the receiving computer.
- Can be configured to use no compression, JPEG lossless or JPEG2000 lossless compression, depending on the capability of the receiving system. Images originally transferred using lossy compression (e.g. US multiframe studies) are transferred with the same compression.
- Studies can be sent via secure DICOM TLS encryption, so that a VPN is not required for secure transmission.
- A prefix letter or facility name can be added to the Patient ID for all studies from each location to maintain a unique Patient ID for studies being sent from multiple facilities to a central location.
- If any data transmission fails, DICOM Forward will attempt to resend the files until a successful transfer has been made.
- Transfer of studies can be restricted to a certain time period in the day so studies can be sent during low network traffic times.
